Here are your Talking Points:
Call and say:
"I would like to speak with [Representative so-in-so, or Senator so-in-so]". (If they are not available, try to schedule a time for you to speak with them directly. You can say the following whether you are speaking to the legislator directly or to their assistants).
"I am a constituent in your District and I am calling you today to let you know that I support the Convention of States Project and I want to know your position on the COS Resolution. Can the constituents in your district count on you to co-sponsor or vote yes on the Convention of States Resolution?"
If they answer "Yes, I support the Convention of States", Respond:
"Thank you. I appreciate hearing that you are willing to stand with us and rein in the federal government through the only Constitutional solution that we have".
If they answer "No, I do not support the Convention of States project", Respond:
"I would like to know why you will not support the only constitutional solution we have to rein in our out of control federal government. I would much rather have you and my state legislature make the decisions for this state, than some far away DC bureaucrat in the federal government, and this is the only constitutional solution we have to do that."
Then Ask them: "What would it take for you to change your position on this issue?" (Please Stick to this question, “What will it take to change your position on the Convention of States resolution?” until you are able to get a definitive answer).
Whatever answer is given to the question above, Respond:
"Great, I will have the Convention of States volunteers in this district, or the national COS team get back with you to address your questions. Do you prefer they get back to you via phone or email? What is the best email or phone number to reach you to do that?"
If they answer "I need more information", Respond:
...So, if I can get you more information that addresses your concerns, you would consider voting yes for the Convention of States resolution?
If your Legislator says "YES", Respond:
"Great, I will have the Convention of States volunteers in this district, or the national COS team get back with you to address your questions. Do you prefer they get back to you via phone or email? What is the best email or phone number to reach you to do that?"
NEXT STEPS: Send an email to: [email protected] and put the state and the Legislators name in the subject line. In the body of the email state:
1.) Your name and contact info.
2.) Your state and legislator's name.
3.) Summary of your conversation with your legislators position.
4.) Your legislators preferred method of follow up and contact info.
5.) If you want to be cc'd or telephoned to be part of the next steps.
That’s it! Of course, it’s always best to use your own words and explain it however you feel most comfortable. We’ve provided this outline as a guide. Don’t feel like you have to follow it verbatim.
Good luck! -The COS Project Team
